DRAGON'S BLOOD PERFUME
The tiny label, white and handwritten, reads
"Dragon's Blood Perfume."
The hazy liquid smells like a memory:
a friend who loves to camp,
a combination or specially chosen scents,
of damp soil
of a man's flesh
of cinnamon resin
of fresh blood and burning wood.
filter up from the dram or two
of the potion that I treasure.
The scent wraps me
in its warmth, its strength
like his arms do
The scent lifts me
into deeper concentration
because of his inspiration
The scent lingers to remind me
of a home I want to have
when I can have it with him
The scent that sends me
to sleep without nightmares
because he holds me close
The scent that calms me
when my tongue carries only sharp words
as he always does
The scent that floated
through my wedding chapel
and will settle on my grave.
In the bathroom
my husband asks what I have
I close my vial of memories:
my vial of the cologne
he used to wear.
I smiled and tell him the truth.
"I have you."
